100 WORKERS AT NORANDA TO BE LAID OFF

Some 100 workers at Noranda Bauxite Company in St. Ann, are to be laid off for two weeks, due to a down turn in the global alumina industry. The union representing the workers, the University and Allied Workers Union UAWU, says Noranda will suspend mining operations starting this week until January 4 next year. President of the UAWU Senator Lambert Brown says Noranda took the decision, based on the low price of alumina and the volatility in the global alumina market, where a number of major companies have shut down. He says to ensure that workers are not burdened by the layoff, some will take vacation leave, while others will be paid an advance in salary.
