Amnesty International throws out Bunting’s ‘national security’ claims

Peter Bunting’s refusal to answer questions on human rights violations by the police are a threat to Jamaica’s international obligations on justice and truth, says Amnesty International. Additionally, the international watchdog said such silence sends the wrong signal on ending the impunity of the police in Jamaica. The body also said the Jamaican Government needs to be transparent regarding the sudden departure of Commissioner of Police, Owen Ellington. In a response to questions posed by the Opposition on the issues, National Security Minister, Bunting said the Government of Jamaica does not disclose certain content of communication with its international partners about matters of national defense. The watchdog said it opposes that position.
