ATHLETICS: VCB, Bailey-Cole Win Sprint Events At Zurich Diamond League

The Jamaican pair of Veronica Campbell-Brown and Kemar Bailey-Cole won the 100 metre races at yesterday’s Diamond League meeting in Zurich, Switzerland. Two-time Olympic 200-metre champion Campbell-Brown got the better of Murielle Ahoure of the Ivory Coast to win the women’s 100 metres. Both Campbell-Brown and Ahoure clocked 11.04 seconds. Blessing Okagbare of Nigeria, who won the sprint double at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, finished third in 11.06 seconds. The other Jamaican in the line-up, Kerron Stewart, finished fourth in 11.19 seconds. Bailey-Cole, the 2014 Commonwealth Games champion, clocked a season-best 9.96 seconds to beat a strong field in the men’s 100 metres. The Jamaican won ahead of American Michael Rodgers, who clocked 10.05. Former world record holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica and ex-world champion Tyson Gay, both of whom returned from drugs bans this summer, finished fourth and eighth respectively. Powell clocked 10.07, while Gay recorded 10.35 for last place.
