There have been disruptions in the public transportation system in the Corporate Area today as bus operators have decided to withdraw their service. The operators Wednesday night voted to carry out their threat to protest against the decision to terminate some sub-franchise licenses in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region (KMTR). Come next year, the Jamaica Urban Transit Company will be reducing the number of sub-franchise holders from 387 to 250. Groups representing the more than 100 operators who will be displaced are upset that their concerns have not been addressed by the Government. Louis Barton, president of the Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators (JATOO) gave details on today’s protest. He said, “The routes in the KMTR will not have any of the private operators. All of us decided …we will be staying out of the KMTR until we hear from at least a minister of government - a policy maker who can give us an idea of what will happen for the future. ” said Louis Barton, president of the Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators.
