The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) says it is not sure when streetlights on Gem Road off Maxfield Avenue will be restored after residents damaged them while stealing electricity. The JPS says residents began stealing electricity from the streetlights after it disconnected a transformer with illegal connections that was posing a danger to persons. The JPS also reported that its personnel were treated with hostility while carrying out operations in the area yesterday. Last month the company used $2.6 million to fix 85 street lights which were destroyed during electricity theft. JPS also says it has to pay US$5,000 to replace burnt out transformers.
