Hike in fares to come says Davies

Commuters should brace for another increase in transportation costs before the end of the month. With the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) to be granted a fare adjustment in coming days, Dr. Omar Davies, Minister of Transport, has now signalled that the cost of travelling by taxi will also be going up this month.
During public consultations in June taxi operators said they were prepared to accept a 40 per cent fare increase, noting that inflation had eaten away their earnings since the last hike granted in 2010.
The JUTC has warned that it will fall further into financial crisis if the Government does not give the green light this month for the company to increase fares. Reverend Garnet Roper, JUTC chairman, said the entity is in a precarious state as it relates to its ability to meet its expenses.
