The Parliament has approved a resolution to increase the fees charged by the Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA). Finance Minister Dr Peter Phillips, who moved the resolution, told the House of Representatives that the increases are needed to help the FLA recover costs. A firearm dealer's licence will go up from $100,000 to $200,000; a firearm gunsmith's licence has been increased by $5,000 to $25,000; while a firearm user's special permit will move up from $4,000 to $6,000. It will now cost $12,000 up from $8,000 for a firearm user's licence, which authorises the holder to carry a firearm or ammunition anywhere in Jamaica. The price of a firearm user's licence, which authorises the holder to carry a firearm or ammunition in some specified areas in Jamaica will move up to $6,000 from $4,000; while a firearm user's employee certificate has been increased from $4,000 to $5,000.
