Hurricane Matthew: 702 People Now In St Thomas Hurricane Shelters

Some 702 people including 288 children are now in shelters across St Thomas. Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie says there are more than 900 shelters opened across the island, several of which have been occupied since Sunday. Mr. McKenzie, who gave an update on the shelters during a news conference on Sunday said they are equipped to respond to the needs of the affected persons. While some of those in shelters are homeless people, a large numbers are from low-lying areas subject to flooding and storm surges. The Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation says 31 of its Emergency Shelters are open. Meanwhile the eight persons sheltering at the Morant Bay Primary School have now been supplied with food, as they were without mattress and food when they arrived at the shelter.
