JUTC estimates $1.4b loss this year

It is estimated that the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) will lose approximately $1.4 billion this year. Despite the recent fares increase, the cost to the public for the operation of the bus service is $8 billion and the gap will be filled by government grants and subventions. JUTC managing director Colin Campbell told this morning&;s meeting of Parliament&;s Public Administration and Appropriations Committee (PAAC) that the loss is predicted despite projections that the new fare box will yield $5.4 billion this fiscal year. He said that the loss would have been projected at approximately $2.2 billion, without the fare increase.
