Man wrongly imprisoned for two decades, awaits Privy Council ruling

The fate of a 59-year-old man, who was wrongly imprisoned for 21 years rests in the hands of the local Privy Council. The UK-based court is expected to make a decision in October if the man should be released. William Purcell was incarcerated in 1993 after a judge, sentenced him to mandatory life imprisonment for gun offences in error. Attorney-at-law K Churchill Neita, QC clarified the error stating that the judge at the time, did not take into account changes to the law in the 1980s, abolishing mandatory life sentences for gun offences. The change to the law has led to the review of the cases of more than 400 prisoners. Neita wrote to the Governor General Sir Patrick Allen about Purcell’s situation in July.
