There have been mixed reactions to the Finance Minister's announcement of a modification of the tax, relating to imported services. According to one local news source, president of the Jamaica Employers' Federation (JEF) David Wan, says the tax will likely result in a reduction in the number of foreign personnel and overseas consultants hired by local companies. Prior to the modification, businesses were able to claim for the General Consumption Tax (GCT) paid on import purchases known as Input Tax Credit. The government is now proposing that the GCT Act be amended, to allow for imported services not being subject to an input tax credit. The government expects it will help it raise J2.3 billion dollars.
