Ronald Thwaites, Minister of Education, is reporting that more than 200 teachers have taken up relocation offers to facilitate the improvement of the school system. However, he acknowledged that others have refused the offers for various reasons, and these issues are being addressed. The relocation matter has been prominent on the public agenda, especially in light of the International Monetary Fund’s, (IMF) mandate for the education sector to become more efficient. But the exercise has been hit by reports that some teachers are being coerced or intimidated into relocating. Mr. Thwaites stated that the exercise has been mostly smooth, with some lingering matters to be tackled with the Jamaica Teacher's Association (JTA).
