Police Federation Disappointed As Gov't Decides Against Setting Up Oversight Body For INDECOM

The Jamaica Police Federation says it’s shocked that the government has decided against putting in place an oversight body to monitor the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM). In a release this morning, Federation Chairman Sergeant Raymond Wilson said the union which represents rank and file members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is disappointed with the government&;s decision. Sergeant Wilson says even though INDECOM is a commission of Parliament, the Police Federation believes it needs an oversight body given that this single agency has been vested with the authority to investigate, proffer charges as well as prosecute. The head of the police union says such absolute powers have the potential to corrupt and it erodes the value for which the principles of separation of powers was established. Sergeant Wilson accuses INDECOM of having little or no regard for the human rights of police personnel when carrying out investigations.
