Public Defender contemplates legal action over Riverton Fire

The Office of the Public Defender is contemplating legal action having now completed one aspect of its investigation into the massive fire at the Riverton Disposal site in 2012, this according to one local news source. The agency had been gathering data to determine who was responsible and to possibly seek compensation on behalf persons who were affected by the thick smoke which blanketed sections of the Corporate Area for several days. The action would be for breaches of the Charter of Rights provisions of the Constitution. One provision speaks to the right of citizens to enjoy a healthy and productive environment, and it has been argued that the situation at the disposal site at the time breached those rights.
