There is more indication that the local tobacco industry is seeing a fall-out arising from the ban on smoking in public places. Jamaica Customs is now reporting a decline in cigarette sales. Commissioner of Customs, Major Richard Reese, has linked this in part to the July 15 implementation of the smoking regulations: Cigarette manufacturer Carreras last month reported that sales had fallen by nearly 30 per cent since the smoking regulations took effect.
The Customs boss has confirmed that the fall in cigarette sales will impact inflows into the country's coffers. However, Major Reese said while tax earnings from that sector have declined, overall collections by Customs are still above target.
