The Republican Party has taken control of the United States Senate in the mid-term elections. This sets up an even more challenging final two years in office for President Obama, a Democrat. He now faces the reality of having to contend with his political opponents who will have the majority in both houses of Congress. Having picked up seats in Arkansas, Montana, South Dakota, West Virginia, Colorado and North Carolina, the Republicans reached the 51 seats required to take control of the Senate. The Republicans also appeared to be on course to increase their majority in the House of Representatives.
