Taxi men given a week to vacate Mandela Park, transport groups say

Private transport operators in Kingston are complaining that taxi men have been given a week to vacate the taxi-stand at the Mandela Park in Half Way Tree. According to the Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators (JATOO) and the Corporate Area Transport Association (CATA) the police have threatened to clear the park of all taxi men starting Tuesday, April 22 “despite the fact that the KSAC erected signs that says ‘Taxi Stand’”. The operators are speculating that this new policy is in order to find space for the increased number of Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) buses expected in the Half Way Tree Transportation Hub. The groups contend that taxi operators have been granted permission to use this area for over 12 years.
