ZIK-V ALERT

There are reports that ZIK V is in Jamaica…It is reported that 12 people have been treated over the past 3-4 months for the virus. Dr. Sandra Williams Phillips said that she has treated 12 cases of Zik V in Jamaica. Dr. Williams Phillips says she had the ZikaV as well. She said no blood tests were done on the 12 she diagnosed with ZikaV but they had classic symptoms. The Zika virus is borne by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the same insect responsible for transmitting the dengue and chikungunya viruses and share similar symptoms. It was first isolated in the Zika Forest of Uganda in 1947. The first recorded outbreak was in Indonesia in 1978. Another outbreak occured on Yap Island in the southwestern Pacific Ocean in 2007. Earlier this year, there was an outbreak of the mosquito-borne Zika Virus (Zik-V) in Brazil.
